SUMMARY:Duo Violao +1 (Brazil) / MANtrio / Combo Zero
DESCRIPTION:We’re looking forward to welcoming Duo Violao +1\, on tour from Brazil\, playing a survey of traditional choro music. \nDoors at 7:30pm; Music at 8:00pm\n$8-12 admission supports the artists and the AltLib\n—————————————- \nLong before the emergence of bossa nova and samba\, choro took shape in 19th-century Rio de Janeiro as the first truly Brazilian musical style; A confluence of popular European dance music like the polka and waltz with African rhythms\, particularly habanera (via Cuba) and Angolan lundu. \nDuo Violao is the duo project of Brazilian guitarists Rogerio Souza and Edinho Gerber. They have since expanded to Duo Violao +1\, when during their first visit to the Bay Area in 2015\, they met percussionist Ami Molinelli and the musical connection was immediate. Over the following years\, they travelled up and down the West Coast\, performing and developing a unique sound while navigating the rhythms\, styles\, and sub-genres of Choro music. In 2018\, their hard work paid off as Ami Molinelli received an IAC grant from the San Francisco Arts Commission for their collaboration. The result is “A Historia do Choro”\, a survey of the musical history and evolution of Brasil’s greatest art form that reveals its rhythmic and harmonic permutations. Their playing creates a unique musical statement\, coherent in timbre and vision\, marvelously varied in its nuances.\nhttp://www.duoviolaobrasil.com/ \nAdditionally\, they will be joined by two local jazz groups: \nMANtrio – MANtrio is an improvising trio featuring pianist and vocalist Sage Romey\, bassist Sarah Yates and drummer Melanie Sehman. Based in the jazz idiom\, the group brings together a wide variety of backgrounds and influences\, from West African and contemporary classical music to medieval music and jazz Manouche. Using radical listening as a guiding principle\, the group uses the standard trio format as a laboratory for exploration\, performing improvised music\, original creative work and experimental arrangements. \nCombo Zero – Combo Zero is a local jazz ensemble. \nAltLib is always ALL AGES!\nNOTAFLOF \nRSVP and more info: https://www.facebook.com/events/370599577149855/

SUMMARY:Caminando Hacia La Autonomia (Walking towards Autonomy)
DESCRIPTION:Cherán is a Purépecha indigenous community in Michoacán\, Mexico. Beginning in 2000 organized crime infiltrated the town. With time the presence of narco-traffickers and their power grew substantially. They began to raze the precious forests surrounding the community. When community members tried to defend the forests they were assassinated or kidnapped. The forest was devastated and the people terrorized. The situation put everyone’s life at risk. At sunset Cherán turned into a ghost town. \nOn April 15\, 2011 a group of women decided to stop the situation: They covered the streets to stop the pass of the clandestine tree-cutters. Rapidly the entire community reacted and the uprising united\, burning cars and setting up barricades at all the town entrances. Against all this\, the politicians and local police fled Cherán in fear. The community took the city government offices like the vehicles and weapons of the police\, to begin to provide security. At the same time the town decided to definitively expel the political parties to retake their traditional forms of self-government. \nFour years after the uprising\, community members speak to us of the different stages that have passed in the construction of their new world\, where you are really giving voice to the people\, in which the boss is the assembly\, while the government obeys. This is the beginning of a long process of building autonomy of which each and everyone can learn. \nRSVP and more info: https://www.facebook.com/events/490552628191247/ \n???? ????? ??? ???????? ????????? ???:\nSimón Sedillo has contributed to the production of a wide variety of documentary films\, which focus primarily on the effects of neoliberalism and militarism on indigenous communities\, immigrant communities\, and communities of color in the US and Mexico. Sedillo tours universities and community centers throughout the USA screening films and facilitating discussions and workshops on political economy and geopolitics in Mexico and the USA. \nSimón also teaches geopolitics and political economy and is the Coordinator for Independent Studies at SURCO for a summer and a winter study abroad program in Oaxaca\, Mexico. He has been teaching geopolitics in the US and community based media production in communities in the US and Mexico for the last 15 years. SUMMARY:Indigenous Strategies for Community Liberation
DESCRIPTION:These can be depressing and scary times in the USA\, but this is also a really good opportunity to dissect our realities and begin to figure out what we are going to do to build the world in which we do want to live. This workshop/presentation will help us learn from one another while pushing one another towards self determination\, self defense\, and autonomy. \n2PM-4PM\nSuggested Donation $5-$25 \nThis workshop will begin by defining and clarifying our understanding of 3 basic concepts for community based liberation: Self determination\, Self Defense\, and Autonomy. These key terms will be a recurring theme throughout the process of the workshop/presentation. \nWe will look at several examples of traditional forms of self governance taking place in Mexico. We will begin with the Zapatista uprising in Chiapas and working our way through different examples in Oaxaca\, Guerrero\, and Michoacán. These examples will include general assembly structures and practices; an overview of necessary attitudes and world views necessary to carry out these forms of self governance; and an analysis of power\, powerlessness\, and the exercising of collective power as strategy of attaining self determination. \nA common theme through out mesoamerica has to do with a living list of indigenous principles for unity and resistance. These principles are a toolbox for day to day community organizing as well as for moments of resistance or direct action. We will go over the principles in detail and review how we can apply them to the set of goals we set up for ourselves earlier in the discussion. \nTo conclude we can go over the 3 basic concepts for community liberation: Self determination\, Self Defense\, and Autonomy once again\, and begin to discuss what forms of traditional self governance we can translate into our community goals and aspirations in neighborhoods\, the workplace\, and in our hood. \nBrought to you by…\nNWIC Trio Club \nRSVP and more info: https://www.facebook.com/events/543232036503761/ \n???? ????? ??? ???????? ????????? ???: \nSimón Sedillo has contributed to the production of a wide variety of documentary films\, which focus primarily on the effects of neoliberalism and militarism on indigenous communities\, immigrant communities\, and communities of color in the US and Mexico.
