SUMMARY:Chirgilchin: Tuvan Throat Singers with Yuliyana Krivoshapkina
DESCRIPTION:The Alternative Library is excited to bring the traditional Tuvan throat singing group Chirgilchin\, and Yuliyana Krivoshapkina to Bellingham for a concert of traditional Tuvan folk music! \nDoors at 7:30pm; Music at 8:00pm\nTicket pre-sales will be announced soon ~~~ \nThe word Chirgilchin has two translations: “dance of the air in the heat of the day” and “miracle.” Established in 1996\, Chirgilchin is a group of musicians from Tuva\, a small Russian province north of Western Mongolia. Their music tells stories of their homeland\, its horses and its people. The monotone sustained notes that branch out into overtone singing with slight shifts in pitch give Tuvan music its characteristic buoyant yet meditative drone quality.\nhttps://www.pnmartists.com/chirgilchin \nThroat-singing is an extraordinary vocal form in which one singer produces two or more voices simultaneously\, the low sounds in the throat harmonizing with middle and high flute-like overtones\, to create richly layered melodies that evoke Central Asian steppes and nomadic life. Atmospheric and mesmeric\, this music is almost too difficult to describe in words and must be heard to be believed. The most advanced forms of throat-singing come from Tuva\, and the members of Chirgilchin are among the best and most accomplished throat-singers in all of Tuva. \nThe concert will be opened by a solo performance from Yuliyana Krivoshapkina\, a singer and virtuoso in the art of the khomus\, the national instrument of the Sakha Republic. It functions much like a Jew’s harp\, but differs in several respects. A conventional Jew’s harp is limited in range\, volume\, and pitch. The khomus is loud and strikingly expansive in range. Yuliyana has mastered playing sounds across nearly three octaves. Her music draws on the powers of Nature and the wisdom and traditions of the Yakut people to portray the timeless relationship between Man and the Universe. \n~~~\nAltLib is always ALL AGES \nRSVP and more info: https://www.facebook.com/events/2111744542227248/

SUMMARY:Free Jazz / Free Food / Free Spirits
DESCRIPTION:Come join us for a night of free jazz and free food in the company of free spirits!\n$6-10 supports the artists and the AltLib \nWith his seventh solo album “Broken Silence\,” Swiss saxophonist Urs Leimgruber allows more space for the expression of the quiet – a sort of contemplative essence. Having long left the path of powerful electric jazz that characterized his time with “OM” during the 1970s\, he has since evolved a delicately sophisticated and often quite abstract style. The nine pieces found on “Broken Silence” have been developed out of silence\, which they – mostly gently – break\, only to subside back into eloquent silence in the end.\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8z6il8S7X8 \nTIME — On tour from Florida\, TIME is an improv dance/noise piece performed inside a wall of fabric with interactive projections called Awakening of the Self. https://timeiam.bandcamp.com/ \nSage Romey is a Junior at Western\, perusing an interdisciplinary degree concentrated in Decolonial Ethnomusicology with a concentration in Africana studies and jazz. Sage was introduced to the joys of music listening to her grandfather’s records and plunking out tunes on the piano next to her mother. Singing since she could talk\, and playing piano since she was seven\, she has always been drawn to music as a form communication. Today Sage plays with numerous groups through the WWU jazz program and in the community\, constantly searching for new sounds and means of expression through music. \nAltLib is always All Ages~

SUMMARY:Nakatani Gong Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Doors at 7:30pm; Performance at 8:00pm \nTatsuya Nakatani returns to Bellingham to lead a performance of the Nakatani Gong Orchestra (NGO)\, a nomadic\, large ensemble contemporary sound art project\, featuring 10 performers bowing and striking large gongs under Nakatani’s conduction. In the last decade\, the NGO has performed hundreds of concerts involving thousands of participants around the world in the creation of these transformative sound works. \nThis project is not a traditional music program or traditional Japanese music — it is a contemporary sound art project. \nTatsuya Nakatani (1970) is an avant-garde sound artist and master percussionist originally from Osaka\, Japan. Based in the United States since 1994\, he lives in Truth or Consequences\, New Mexico. Since the late 1990s\, Nakatani has released over 80 recordings in the US and Europe and has toured extensively; performing solo\, in collaboration with other artists\, and with his large ensemble project – the Nakatani Gong Orchestra. \nNakatani’s adaption of the Chinese wind gong to respond to his percussive bowing technique in his solo work (c. 1995) led to the inclusion of other players trained in his methods to realize his compositions. The Kobo bows\, mallets\, and surrounding instrumentation equipment have all been developed and are hand crafted by Tatsuya Nakatani. After ten years of planning and preparation\, the NGO began touring in 2011 with four adapted gongs and has grown to 17 gongs today (January 2019). It is the only bowed gong orchestra in the world. \nHeld in the beautiful and naturally resonant space of the Alternative Library\, the Nakatani Gong Orchestra will surely be an incomparable experience! \nAdvance tickets are available via Brown Paper Tickets:\nhttps://ngoataltlib.brownpapertickets.com \nRSVP and more info: https://www.facebook.com/events/370833003645346/

SUMMARY:Poetrynite ft Nate Witham
DESCRIPTION:It’s the last poetrynight of National Poetry Month\, and we’ve got another local poet to share with you. \nAs usual\, we’ll start with open mic\, give our feature some time and then close out with whoever didn’t get a chance to read. \nNate Witham is a monstrous mountain man from Montana; with venison tendons in his teeth and the word in his gut. Poetry is the gristle of his meat\, but lately he’s been trying on some longer forms; playing with prose as it were. Nate’s work is grounded very much in physical reality\, but only to serve as a platform for externalized introspection; taking a long look in the mirror and getting lost in his pores. \n  \nThe second longest running Bellingham poetry group – Poetrynight.\nAll people are invited to join the group any Monday night at 7pm. You don’t have to be a writer to participate as readers of all ages are always invited to sign up to read between 7-7:30. The duo draw influence from mid-century R&B\, post-punk\, the surrealist movement and ritual magick. SUMMARY:Poetrynite ft First Matter Press
DESCRIPTION:First Matter Press is a writers’ collective in Portland\, Oregon intent on embodying community and self-ownership. Because the publishing industry imposes extensive barriers to publication of experimental and self-aware waves of literature\, we have made it our mission to dissolve those obstacles while facilitating writer influence over the definition of quality writing. \nCheck them out at firstmatterpress.org \nOur four poets for the evening: \nLauren is a storyteller across mediums with a soft spot for the unusual. She is a co-founder of the Eastside Poetry Workshop here in Portland. Otherwise\, Magic\, Lauren’s first book\, has been described as “A lovely collection of divinatory symbols masquerading as poems” but in her own words\, this collection serves as both a love letter and a court summons to all that eludes us a spiritual beings having a human experience. \nAndrew Chenevert is the co-founder of the Eastside Poetry Workshop\, where he has subjected the attendees to most if not all of the poems in The Night Sky is a Place Where Things Get Lost. The poems in this book begin with lines taken from comic books at semi-random. Mercifully\, the poems themselves have nothing to do with comics. He lives in Portland\, Oregon [hold for applause] and would love to read poems at your wedding. \nK. M. Lighthouse is a queer poet and priestess creating portals for intuitive knowledge through writing spaces and workshops for self-healing. The poet has two poetry chapbooks available\, You Are an Ambiguous Pronoun and The Observer Effect\, and her other works appear in The Florida Review and Toasted Cheese. \nAsh Good was born in Paradise\, California\, and raised in a small Oregon mill town. She is the author of 2 chapbooks and 2 full length collections. Tonight marks the release of we are not ready for what we are—poems that explore the growing pains of integrating loss\, losing love and self evolution. Ash is a book designer\, the founder of High Priestesses of Poetry and a facilitator for Portland Women Writers where she holds sacred circles in for story tellers to connect with their inner healer and highest self. \nRSVP and more info: https://www.facebook.com/events/2341831186047603/ \nThe second longest running Bellingham poetry group – Poetrynight.\nAll people are invited to join the group any Monday night at 7pm. You don’t have to be a writer to participate as readers of all ages are always invited to sign up to read between 7-7:30. Not all works must be originals. \nPoetrynight got its start in Stuart’s Coffeehouse in 1995\, when a group of poets gathered around a table to share their current work. It has grown over the years as it moved to different locations. \nPoetrynight is a program under the Whatcom poetry series\, and besides the weekly open mic/feature\, can provide creative writing workshops for schools.

SUMMARY:Paul Metzger / Peader MacMahon Trio / John Saint Pelvyn
DESCRIPTION:Deeply idiosyncratic folk music\, transcending time and space with visions from every corner fo the world!\nDoors at 7:30pm; Music at 8:00pm\n$10 supports the artists and the AltLib \nPAUL METZGER – A master on a self-built 23 string banjo\, Paul Metzger’s idiosyncratic & deeply original long form improvisations bring to mind American primitive guitar\, the sarod of Hindustani music\, or the Chinese Erhu. Fundamentally\, his music grows from a deep commitment to exploring every possible sound that can be extracted from his instrument. His ‘home-made’ aesthetic has drawn comparisons to DIY mavericks like Charlie Nothing and his Dingulators or Eugene Chadbourne with his electric rake\, but the depth of Metzger’s explorations led David Keenan to assert in Wire magazine that Metzger’s playing “reveals the true meaning of virtuosity.” A key player in the world of avant-garde & experimental folk\, he creates music evocative of some magical forgotten age but that is simultaneously rooted in the eternal present when fingers touch strings.\nhttps://paulmetzger.net/ \nPEADER MacMAHON / DANNY VOGEL / RICHARD SCHOLTZ\nPeadar MacMahon is an Irish Folk Singer\, storyteller and multi instrumentalist\, originally from Limerick\, Ireland. His strength lies in his unique interpretation of historic songs\, and performances that are equal parts charming\, heartfelt\, engaging and educational. He is joined for this show by Richard Scholtz and Danny Vogel.\nhttps://peadarmacmahon.com/ \nJOHN SAINT PELVYN\nGuitarist\, thereminist\, singer\, and player of some species of dismantled electrified folk\, John Saint Pelvyn is a musical enigma of the best kind. At the root of his playing is something akin to traditional stride\, but rich with quivering whammy bar wobble and shimmering feedback. He often plays the tailfin strings of his archtop like one would play harmonics\, or retunes seamlessly mid-stream to create a shifting temperament across the length of a piece. An affinity for the likes of John Fahey and Loren Mazzacane-Connors can be heard\, but the comparisons quickly fall away as one takes in this ambidextrous musical sensibility. He sings otherworldly vocal duets with his theremin while simultaneously accompanying himself with fingerpicking or modulated feedback tones across otherwise inviting harmonic landscapes based on blues & folk motifs\, overshadowing them with clouds of squelch that loom like an approaching post-noise squall\, but that ultimately swell and punctuate more like the tone clusters of Henry Cowell or the lyrical saxophone of Frank Lowe.\nhttps://johnsaintpelvyn.bandcamp.com/ \nRSVP and more info here: https://www.facebook.com/events/323797485144688/\nAltLib is always ALL AGES~\nNOTAFLOF
