DESCRIPTION:It’s the last poetrynight of National Poetry Month\, and we’ve got another local poet to share with you. \nAs usual\, we’ll start with open mic\, give our feature some time and then close out with whoever didn’t get a chance to read. \nNate Witham is a monstrous mountain man from Montana; with venison tendons in his teeth and the word in his gut. Poetry is the gristle of his meat\, but lately he’s been trying on some longer forms; playing with prose as it were. Nate’s work is grounded very much in physical reality\, but only to serve as a platform for externalized introspection; taking a long look in the mirror and getting lost in his pores. \n  \nThe second longest running Bellingham poetry group – Poetrynight.\nAll people are invited to join the group any Monday night at 7pm. You don’t have to be a writer to participate as readers of all ages are always invited to sign up to read between 7-7:30. Not all works must be originals. \nPoetrynight got its start in Stuart’s Coffeehouse in 1995\, when a group of poets gathered around a table to share their current work. It has grown over the years as it moved to different locations. \nPoetrynight is a program under the Whatcom poetry series\, and besides the weekly open mic/feature\, can provide creative writing workshops for schools.

She is a co-founder of the Eastside Poetry Workshop here in Portland. Otherwise\, Magic\, Lauren’s first book\, has been described as “A lovely collection of divinatory symbols masquerading as poems” but in her own words\, this collection serves as both a love letter and a court summons to all that eludes us a spiritual beings having a human experience. \nAndrew Chenevert is the co-founder of the Eastside Poetry Workshop\, where he has subjected the attendees to most if not all of the poems in The Night Sky is a Place Where Things Get Lost. The poems in this book begin with lines taken from comic books at semi-random. Mercifully\, the poems themselves have nothing to do with comics. He lives in Portland\, Oregon [hold for applause] and would love to read poems at your wedding. \nK. M. Lighthouse is a queer poet and priestess creating portals for intuitive knowledge through writing spaces and workshops for self-healing. The poet has two poetry chapbooks available\, You Are an Ambiguous Pronoun and The Observer Effect\, and her other works appear in The Florida Review and Toasted Cheese. \nAsh Good was born in Paradise\, California\, and raised in a small Oregon mill town. She is the author of 2 chapbooks and 2 full length collections. Tonight marks the release of we are not ready for what we are—poems that explore the growing pains of integrating loss\, losing love and self evolution. This show will feature WWEAMS artists Sean Dodd\, Gabe Postle\, and Jonathon McCullough. \nLIEW NIYOMKARN\nLiew Niyomkarn is an Antwerpen based artist who works with sound\, found objects and essay. Liew’s work is known for its ecstatic and unpredictable event. Often expresses a sensory of flexibility and impermanence behavior through live performance. She often uses essay\, found-objects\, and sculpture in her performance. DESCRIPTION:Deeply idiosyncratic folk music\, transcending time and space with visions from every corner fo the world!\nDoors at 7:30pm; Music at 8:00pm\n$10 supports the artists and the AltLib \nPAUL METZGER – A master on a self-built 23 string banjo\, Paul Metzger’s idiosyncratic & deeply original long form improvisations bring to mind American primitive guitar\, the sarod of Hindustani music\, or the Chinese Erhu. Fundamentally\, his music grows from a deep commitment to exploring every possible sound that can be extracted from his instrument. His ‘home-made’ aesthetic has drawn comparisons to DIY mavericks like Charlie Nothing and his Dingulators or Eugene Chadbourne with his electric rake\, but the depth of Metzger’s explorations led David Keenan to assert in Wire magazine that Metzger’s playing “reveals the true meaning of virtuosity.” A key player in the world of avant-garde & experimental folk\, he creates music evocative of some magical forgotten age but that is simultaneously rooted in the eternal present when fingers touch strings.\nhttps://paulmetzger.net/ \nPEADER MacMAHON / DANNY VOGEL / RICHARD SCHOLTZ\nPeadar MacMahon is an Irish Folk Singer\, storyteller and multi instrumentalist\, originally from Limerick\, Ireland. He is joined for this show by Richard Scholtz and Danny Vogel.\nhttps://peadarmacmahon.com/ \nJOHN SAINT PELVYN\nGuitarist\, thereminist\, singer\, and player of some species of dismantled electrified folk\, John Saint Pelvyn is a musical enigma of the best kind. At the root of his playing is something akin to traditional stride\, but rich with quivering whammy bar wobble and shimmering feedback. He often plays the tailfin strings of his archtop like one would play harmonics\, or retunes seamlessly mid-stream to create a shifting temperament across the length of a piece. An affinity for the likes of John Fahey and Loren Mazzacane-Connors can be heard\, but the comparisons quickly fall away as one takes in this ambidextrous musical sensibility. DESCRIPTION:April is National Poetry Month so we’re booking a whole slew of poets to keep your Monday nights busy. \nTonight we have Kami Westoff and Elizabeth Vignali. As usual signup for the open mic starts around 7 and we’ll have our features reading about halfway through. \nElizabeth Vignali is an optician and writer in the Pacific Northwest\, where she coproduces the Bellingham Kitchen Sessions reading series. She is the author of Object Permanence and coauthor of Your Body A Bullet. Her poems and essays have appeared in Willow Springs\, Cincinnati Review\, Mid-American Review\, Timber\, Tinderbox\, The Literary Review\, and elsewhere. \nKami Westhoff is the author of Sleepwalker\, winner of Minerva Rising’s Dare to Be Contest\, and Your Body a Bullet\, co-written with Elizabeth Vignali. Her work has appeared in numerous journals including Meridian\, Carve\, Third Coast\, Passages North\, The Pinch\, West Branch\, Booth\, and Waxwing. DESCRIPTION:The Alternative Library’s Future Jazz series\, explores work from modern experimental composers and improvisers in the field of jazz~ \nDoors at 7:30pm; Music at 8:00pm\n$10 supports the artists and the AltLib \nNaomi Moon Siegel returns to Bellingham\, touring her latest record\, Live at Earshot\, recorded at the Earshot Jazz Festival on October 17\, 2017 at Cornish College. The album features all original compositions by Naomi Moon Siegel with Wayne Horvitz on piano\, Sean Woolstenhulme on guitar\, Geoff Harper on bass\, Eric Eagle on drums\, and special guest Thione Diop on percussion. The album will be released in April 2019 on Slow & Steady records.  \nTrombonist\, composer\, and educator Naomi Moon Siegel creates work geared towards authentic expression and honest connection. A winner of an Earshot Jazz Golden Ear Award for Emerging Artist of the Year\, her expressive trombone playing is changing the way the trombone is heard and viewed. DESCRIPTION:As part of the Bellingham Film Coalition\, Whatcom-Skagit IWW presents… Harlan County\, USA\, a 1976 Oscar-winning documentary film covering the “Brookside Strike” in Harlan County\, southeast Kentucky\, in 1973.\nThey say in Harlan County\nThere are no neutrals there\nYou’ll either be a union man\nOr a thug for J.H. Blair.\n–Which Side Are You On? – Florence Reese \nIn this documentary director Barbara Kopple films a strike in rural Kentucky. After the coal miners at the Brookside Mine join a union\, the owners refuse the labor contract. Once the miners strike\, the owners of the mine respond by hiring scabs to fill the jobs of the workers\, and bring in gun thugs to threaten the miners. The strike\, which lasts more than a year\, frequently becomes violent\, with guns produced on both sides\, and one miner is killed. The film shows that women played a pivotal role in the strike. Their collective strength of character is vividly communicated as they organizes for picket duty\, harass the local sheriff into serving an arrest warrant that they have procured\, and in one of the film’s most memorably tense scenes\, face down a group of gun thugs with sticks and baseball bats.\nThe Director\, Barbara Kopple was asked if she was in danger while working on Harlan County\, USA. She reveals that the head scab\, Basil Collins\, wanted to hire someone to shoot her. However the most dangerous things were the acts of violence by the mine owners to the miners. The mine owners would hire “local prisoners to beat people up\, [shoot] at houses.
