SUMMARY:Film: Vagabond
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Bellingham Film Coalition\, Film Is Truth presents…\n \nFilm Is Truth features French director Agnès Varda for a third month in a row with her most popular film\, Vagabond. In winter in the south of France\, a young woman is found frozen in a ditch. She’s unkempt\, a vagabond. Through flashbacks and brief interviews\, we trace her final weeks as she camps alone or falls in with various others\, many of whom project their needs onto her or try to give her life direction. With an unlikable and abrasive protagonist\, Varda pushes the limits of how women characters are represented on screen. \n$5 suggested donation\nAltLib is always All Ages~\nNOTAFLOF \nRSVP and more info here: www.facebook.com/events/302085927147419/ \nBellingham Film Coalition brought to you by:\nFilm Is Truth\nWhatcom-Skagit IWW\nWhatcom Peace & Justice Center\nAlternative Library

SUMMARY:Film: Harvest of Empire
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Bellingham Film Coalition\, Whatcom Peace & Justice Center presents…\n\n“Harvest of Empire” is based on the book by award-winning journalist and Democracy Now! co-host Juan González. By featuring stories from a wide array of immigrants\, rarely seen archival material\, and interviews with prominent activists\, “Harvest of Empire” takes an unflinching look at the role that U.S. economic and military actions played in triggering the wave of migration that is transforming our nation’s cultural and economic landscape. As Juan González says at the beginning of the film\, “They never teach us in school that the huge Latino presence here is a direct result of our own government’s actions in Mexico\, the Caribbean and Central America over many decades — actions that forced millions from that region to leave their homeland and journey north.” \n$5 suggested donation\nAltLib is always All Ages~\nNOTAFLOF\nRSVP and more info here: www.facebook.com/events/2326158844296149/ \nBellingham Film Coalition is brought to you by:\nWhatcom Peace & Justice Center\nWhatcom-Skagit IWW\nFilm Is Truth\nAlternative Library

SUMMARY:Poetrynite
DESCRIPTION:The second longest running Bellingham poetry group- poetrynight.\nAll people are invited to join the group any Monday night at 7 pm. You don’t have to be a writer to participate as readers of all ages are always invited to sign up to read between 6:30-7:00. Not all works must be originals. \nPoetrynight got its start in Stuart’s Coffeehouse in 1995\, when a group of poets gathered around a table to share their current work. It has grown over the years as it moved to different locations. \nPoetrynight is a program under the Whatcom poetry series and besides the weekly open mic/feature\, can provide creative writing workshops for schools

I also tend talk about the songs\, my kids and whatever else happened that day. I’m most comfortable in this setting\, please join me if you can.” \nThis intimate show is limited to just 50 tickets. \nDoors at 7:30pm; Music at 8:00pm\nAltLib is always ALL AGES!\nWe are serious about that timing~ \nAdvance tickets are available in person at the AltLib or through EventBrite: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/an-evening-with-lou-barlow-in-bellingham-tickets-55101934369 \nRSVP and more info: https://www.facebook.com/events/550889025392557/

SUMMARY:Film: Roger & Me
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Bellingham Film Coalition\, Whatcom-Skagit IWW presents…\n\nTHIS IS WHERE IT ALL BEGAN!! Before all the hype\, big budgets\, and\nmainstream controversy that made him famous\, Michael Moore grabbed a\ncamera and a microphone\, and barged into the offices and cocktail\nparties of the people in power — all so he could ask tough questions\nand demand real answers. It’s all worth it\, if only to see the captains\nof industry squirm… This is some punk rock\, d.i.y.\, socially relevant\nfilm making! \nFlint\, Michigan\, was a city dominated by one company\, General Motors (GM)\, largest corporation in the world. GM Chair Roger B. Smith decides to close eleven GM plants\, most in Flint\, resulting in 30\,000 lost jobs. Despite GM still making profits in the billions\, Smith moves those jobs to new factories in Mexico\, where wages are lower. As such\, Moore goes on a quest to speak to Smith to find out exactly his rationale for relocating those 30\,000 jobs from Flint\, thus devastating the city\, and to show Smith firsthand that devastation. But Moore’s quest is easier said than done. \nAltLib is always all ages~ \nRSVP and more info here: www.facebook.com/events/225780224936382/ \nBellingham Film Coalition brought to you by:\nWhatcom-Skagit IWW\nWhatcom Peace & Justice Center\nFilm Is Truth\nAlternative Library
