SUMMARY:3 Key Ingredients to Building Community in the Real World
DESCRIPTION:A connection-driven community building experience for people interested in shared housing\, shared resources\, and shared lives. \nIt was created to connect people interested in cohousing\, give existing communities tools to become more connected\, and build awareness about Bellingham’s newest cohousing project! \nThe event consists of a potluck\, 3 Ted Talks from leaders in the cohousing space\, and 3 community building activities that help people feel what is necessary to build community. \nYou should come if you are interested in building a new community or want to make an existing community better. \nSCHEDULE\nThe event will begin with a shared meal and everyone should bring their favorite dish! To make sure we don’t all bring the same thing\, tell us what you are bringing here: http://bit.ly/2zNkZyT \nWe’ll kick off the Ted Talk screenings with “Intentional Communities — 50% Less Hippie Than You’d Expect” by Bianca Heyming. The screening will be followed with a sharing activity that will help us create our “Story Board”. \nWe’ll then watch Courtney Martin’s talk on “The New American Dream” and have a discussion that will help us create our “Vision Board”. \nThe final Ted Talk is “How Cohousing Can Make Us Happier (and Live Longer)” by Grace Kim. After the screening\, we will talk about how to cultivate community in the future. \nWe’ll finish the night with a recap of the 3 secrets to building community and how you can take those lessons into your own communities.

SUMMARY:Unist'ot'en Under Attack: Film Fundraiser & Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening dedicated to supporting the Unis’tot’en Camp. We will watch short documentaries about indigenous land defense\, the camp itself\, and the violent raids on the land defenders there beginning January 7\, 2019. There will be a report back from supporters recently returned from Unis’tot’en\, and ample time for discussion. \nPlease bring a donation for Unis’tot’en if you can (we can help you make credit or debit card donations too!) as we will be raising funds for the camp and legal defense. There will be T-shirts\, patches\, zines\, and other goodies—from which all proceeds will go directly to the Unis’tot’en land defenders. \n“Members of the Gitdumt’en and Unis’tot’en clans have been defending their lands – which have never been ceded to the Canadian state – from an incursion by members of the extractive industry who are seeking to push through the multi-billion dollar CoastalGasLink pipeline\, which aims to transport fracked gas across their territories to refineries in Kiliwack and ultimately to export markets in Asia.” \nBC courts have recently signed off on this invasion in a recent decision which goes against prior higher court rulings in favor of the sovereignty of the Wet’suet’en Nation on their unceded land. \nOn January 7th\, 2019\, the RCMP began a violent attack on the Gitum’ten checkpoint. Inspiring more than 50 solidarity actions across Canada and internationally. For recent updates go to https://www.facebook.com/wetsuwetenstrong/\nand https://www.facebook.com/unistoten/ \nThe Bellingham Alternative Library is ADA accessible.\nRSVP and more info here: https://www.facebook.com/events/547115285761849/

DESCRIPTION:A night of songs featuring two women song weavers ~\nDoors at 7:30pm; Music at 8:00pm\n$8 admission supports the artists and the AltLib \nAlexandra Blakely lives between Seattle\, WA and Mexico City. Her music\, filmmaking\, coaching and beyond focuses on moving through stagnant manifestations whether they be on an individual or societal level.\nhttps://www.alexandrablakely.com/ \nRose Drummond is a local songwriter and has previously shared songs as a member of the Wild Choir. \nEuphonium Spaceship is a group hailing from Montana\, who will play a set of music inspired by traditions in Eastern Europe\, Romania\, and Ukraine called\, ‘A Caravan Tour of Transylvania and Beyond’ \n~~~\nAltLib is always ALL AGES

SUMMARY:Samara Jade Trio ~ Improvisation Workshop and Concert
DESCRIPTION:“Philosopholk” songstress Samara Jade is coming to the Bellingham Alternative Library and will be presenting an afternoon workshop on Vocal Play and Exploration\, followed by an evening concert with her trio of upright bass and trumpet\, featuring local cartoon character\, Devin Beu! \nWorkshop at 5pm – $10\nConcert at 7:30pm – $6-12 sliding scale \n~~~ \nSamara Jade is a musical seamstress\, stitching together diverse musical influences into a unique tapestry of intricate yet catchy sounds. Hailing both from the mountains of western North Carolina and New York’s Hudson Valley\, Samara has been in the Pacific Northwest for the past few months\, touring by playing mostly house concerts. Samara’s songwriting\, her groove-based guitar work and the emotive power of her singing voice all draw upon influences such as orchestral folk\, jazz\, soul\, blues\, and Appalachian styles. Samara Jade composes freshly surprising and emotionally relevant songs that approach subjects including but not limited to fermentation\, bird songs and the beautiful insanity of humanness. As heart-opening as it is mind-stimulating\, Samara’s music might be best described by her fans\, one of whom dubbed it: ‘Philosopholk’.\nwww.samarajademusic.com \nHollow Bamboo: A Vocal Improv and Expressive Singing Playshop – Together we will explore opening the creative portal so that we may sing without being held back by self judgment or hesitation. The goal is to work towards becoming more like hollow bamboo – a channel for creative expression and deep wisdom to pour through. We will start off with a series of playful sound and movement activities to open our voices and let down our thinking brains\, entering a space of free vocal improv play and movement and gradually will move more into verbal singing\, during which everyone is given the opportunity to sing what’s on their heart\, with the loving support and listening ears of the rest of the group. \n~~~ \nAltLib is always ALL AGES!

SUMMARY:NOISE Church
DESCRIPTION:Five unclassifiable\, formless noise acts///\nDoors at 7:00pm; noise at 7:30pm\n$6-10 at the door supports the artists and the AltLib \nXenosterra\nEcstatic/Afro-inspired Sci-fi Industrial complete with Modulation Wheel. You might want to dance to this \nNovichok\nhttps://www.facebook.com/novichokband/\nNewly formed psychedelic noise rock trio infused with the free improvisational language of God. \nKristal McKinstry and the Springs –\n#MermaidMusic\nA one mermaid band\, on microtonal morphing slide-guyageum guitar\, with polytonal chanting\, melodic percussion\, n-dimensional effects morphing\, theremins\, reeds\, and such – playing mystical ad-hoc vision-quest narratives in classical sitar raga structure\, drawing from 30’s\, surf\, jazz\, ragtime\, klezmer\, trip-hop\, eastern polynesian islands\, and fibonacci algorithms\, weaving a fountain of fractalling cosmic geometry with vines of organic meandering seed patterns set in motion. – Upcoming show is likely to follow-up recent fibonacci composition works with Navajo and Grieg influences done in harmonic overtone series feedback of shamanic drone vocals through hammond organ emulation. \nObsidian Needle\nhttps://www.facebook.com/ObsidianNeedle/\nFormed from a love of micro-tones\, weird rhythms\, dissonance\, and magick\nstarting as an avant-garde death metal act in 2010\, quickly turned into a Dark Ambient/Musique Concrète act \nNathan Kairis\nhttps://www.facebook.com/NathanKairis/\nAn exercise in contrast\, Nathan Kairis scores the coalescence of light and dark. Built from a looming presence with pinpricks of pure white showing through\, these are the sounds of death\, bringing joy and glory to all.
