SUMMARY:Samara Jade Trio ~ Improvisation Workshop and Concert
DESCRIPTION:“Philosopholk” songstress Samara Jade is coming to the Bellingham Alternative Library and will be presenting an afternoon workshop on Vocal Play and Exploration\, followed by an evening concert with her trio of upright bass and trumpet\, featuring local cartoon character\, Devin Beu! \nWorkshop at 5pm – $10\nConcert at 7:30pm – $6-12 sliding scale \n~~~ \nSamara Jade is a musical seamstress\, stitching together diverse musical influences into a unique tapestry of intricate yet catchy sounds. Hailing both from the mountains of western North Carolina and New York’s Hudson Valley\, Samara has been in the Pacific Northwest for the past few months\, touring by playing mostly house concerts. Samara’s songwriting\, her groove-based guitar work and the emotive power of her singing voice all draw upon influences such as orchestral folk\, jazz\, soul\, blues\, and Appalachian styles. Samara Jade composes freshly surprising and emotionally relevant songs that approach subjects including but not limited to fermentation\, bird songs and the beautiful insanity of humanness. As heart-opening as it is mind-stimulating\, Samara’s music might be best described by her fans\, one of whom dubbed it: ‘Philosopholk’.\nwww.samarajademusic.com \nHollow Bamboo: A Vocal Improv and Expressive Singing Playshop – Together we will explore opening the creative portal so that we may sing without being held back by self judgment or hesitation. The goal is to work towards becoming more like hollow bamboo – a channel for creative expression and deep wisdom to pour through. We will start off with a series of playful sound and movement activities to open our voices and let down our thinking brains\, entering a space of free vocal improv play and movement and gradually will move more into verbal singing\, during which everyone is given the opportunity to sing what’s on their heart\, with the loving support and listening ears of the rest of the group. \n~~~ \nAltLib is always ALL AGES!

SUMMARY:Sub.Media's "Trouble"
DESCRIPTION:Mental Health in all its complexities is a topic that impacts just about everyone… and yet is rarely talked about. Ableism\, rooted in an assumed mental wellness\, is prevalent even among communities that fight against other oppressive social norms such as hetero-patriarchy and institutionalized racism. For those of us experiencing depression\, psychosis or any other form of madness\, our struggles usually remain invisible and unacknowledged until they boil over into full blown crisis. When this happens the massive coercive potential of the state is used to force us back into line. If we are lucky enough to escape the prisons and psych wards that form the double-edged sword of carceral psychology\, we are often left traumatized\, heavily medicated and likely to face further institutionalization down the road. \nIn this month’s episode of Trouble\, subMedia talks to people who are pushing back against this reality. Refusing to accept the notion that mental unwellness is the result of one person’s brain chemistry they instead recognize the fundamentally social and interconnected nature of people and our problems. Rather than allowing interventions to remain the territory of psychiatrists and police\, our guests are reclaiming traditions\, experimenting with self-therapy collectives and building relationships rooted in care and trust that form the resilient foundations so necessary for communities engaged in struggle.

SUMMARY:Altai Kai: Throat Singers from the Russian Altai Republic
DESCRIPTION:The Alternative Library is proud to bring the traditional Russian folk group Altai Kai to Bellingham! \nDoors at 7:30pm; Music at 8:00pm\n$23 supports the traveling artists \nThe members of Altai Kai are throat singing virtuosos\, skilled in the different styles and variations of kai (the Altai word for throat singing) and folk instruments. Their velvety\, low-pitched kargyraa\, mesmerizing khoomei\, and melodic sygyt place the listener amidst forests of singing birds\, gurgling brooks\, and the growls of nighttime predators. Throat singing and the ringing melodies of the khomus\, topshur and accordion all come together to form the sound of Altai Kai. \nStories of nature’s beauty and mighty folk heroes are accompanied by jocular melodies\, dancing rhythms\, and shamanic mysteries. The narrators skillfully relate traditional\, sacred tales and epics of centuries past. \nThe ensemble was founded in 1997 by Urmat Yntaev\, with the goal of preserving and cultivating the traditional culture of the Republic of Altai. Today the group is a laureate of multiple national and international competitions . In 2003\, they were entered into the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest performance of throat singing. They are members of the Folklore Union of Russia\, and the International Organization of Folk Art (an NGO accredited by UNESCO).
\n \nIn this month’s episode of Trouble\, subMedia talks to people who are pushing back against this reality.
