SUMMARY:Incidental Music: Ross Hammond / Melanie Sehman
DESCRIPTION:Doors at 7:30pm; Music at 8:00pm \n$6-12 donation supports the artists! \nIncidental Music is the sound of our environment and the sounds we contribute to it. Ross Hammond says of his book ‘Rural Guitar’ that it contains music to play on your porch\, speaking to the way different environments shape musical choices. Melanie Sehman’s percussion work reminds us to listen to all the sounds around us and suggests music even in the most unlikely and arhythmic audio events. \nTonight we’ll hear from each of them on their instrument of choice\, as well as their own words on their craft. Both musicians will be offering a workshop\, a solo performance\, and if we’re fortunate\, a collaboration. \nRoss Hammond is a prolific guitarist from Sacramento\, co-founder of the In the Flow Jazz and Improvisational Music Festival\, and a self-published author of a handwritten lesson book ‘Rural Guitar’\nhttp://www.rosshammond.com \nMelanie Sehman is a drummer/percussionist\, a professor of music at Whatcom Community College\, and frequents the AltLib playing drums with Hooves and Beak\, and Cat Valley. \nRSVP and more info here: https://www.facebook.com/events/488776848269385/

SUMMARY:Bread & Puppet Theater at Laurel Park
DESCRIPTION:Bread & Puppet Theater comes to Laurel Park in Bellingham\, performing “The Grasshopper Rebellion Circus” which explains and teaches riot and rebellion against intolerable situations with the help of state-of-the-art paper-maché weaponry and the appropriately riotous Bread and Puppet Brass Band. \nB&P Director Peter Schumann describes the show: “Tigers roar\, apes drum their chests\, horses neigh\, and celestial grasshoppers teach ICE agents the basics steps of grasshopper rebellion dancing. A paradise investigation team analyzes the earthlings’ relationship to paradise\, while major representatives of Mother Earth attend a festive Puerto Rican dance of liberation from natural and political disaster.” \nBread & Puppet’s stop in Bellingham is part of a 14-week tour across the country and back showcasing performances of “The Grasshopper Rebellion Circus” and “The Basic Byebye Show”. \nAfter the performance Bread & Puppet will serve its famous free sourdough rye bread with aioli\, and their “Cheap Art” – books\, posters\, postcards\, pamphlets and banners from the Bread and Puppet Press – will be for sale. \nBread & Puppet Theater is an internationally celebrated company that champions a visually rich\, street-theater brand of performance art filled with music\, dance and slapstick. Its shows are political and spectacular\, with huge puppets made of paper-maché and cardboard. Founded in 1963 by Peter Schumann on New York City’s Lower East Side\, the theater has been based in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont since the early 1970s. \nThe show will be presented by the Alternative Library\, with $10-25 suggested donation requested for the performers\, and no one turned away for lack of funds!

SUMMARY:Movie Night: Guardiana de los Ríos
DESCRIPTION:Join the Whatcom Peace and Justice Center at the Alternative Library for a screening of Jennifer Avila’s documentary “Guardiana de los Ríos.” \nThis film focuses on the legacy of Berta Cáceres. Berta was a Honduran environmental activist and member of the indigenous Lenca\, who fought for indigenous rights and environmental justice in the face of state-sponsored violence and forced privitization of natural resources before her murder in March 2016. “Guardiana de los Ríos” centers the voices of Berta\, her community (including the organization COPINH\, which she co-founded)\, and those who continue to fight against hydroelectric projects in Honduras. \nJennifer Ávila is a Honduran journalist\, artist\, and documentary filmmaker. Ávila is the co-founder of Contra Corriente\, a multimedia\, youth and women-led media platform. She will speak in Bellingham\, Washington\, on Tuesday\, October 16\, 2018\, at Christ the Servant Lutheran Church (2600 Lakeway Drive). \nA link to the October 16 event can be found here: \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1533748993435728/

SUMMARY:Poetrynight
DESCRIPTION:The second longest running Bellingham poetry group- poetrynight.\nAll people are invited to join the group any Monday night at 7 pm.  You don’t have to be a writer to participate as readers of all ages are always invited to sign up to read between 6:30-7:00. Not all works must be originals. \nPoetrynight got its start in Stuart’s Coffeehouse in 1995\, when a group of poets gathered around a table to share their current work.  It has grown over the years as it moved to different locations. \nPoetrynight is a program under the Whatcom poetry series and besides the weekly open mic/feature\, can provide creative writing workshops for schools.
