It Can’t Happen Here

Sinclair Lewis

Fictional account of fascist coup following election of a Trump-like populist in the US Presidential election of 1936. A period of brutal repression follows, with formation of a Nazi-like ‘Minute Men’ militia. The protagonist is a liberal editor who gradually becomes involved in the resistance. The story has remarkable parallels to the period following Trump’s ascension to power. The writing is not the best, sometimes too cliche, but very readable.

A fictional fascist coup-by-ballot in the USA in the late 1930s. The author’s informal subtitle was to be ‘…the hell it can’t!’. There are some scary parallels to Trumpism.
