Gertrude Stein

Tender Buttons is the best known of Gertrude Stein’s “hermetic” works. It is a small book separated into three sections – Food, Objects and Rooms each containing prose under subtitles. Its publication in 1914 caused a great dispute with Mabel Dodge Luhan because Mabel had been working to have it published by another publisher. It is however, considered important poetry by one of American literature’s great patrons and feminist impresarios. Stein herself is said to have had an influence on the work of Ernest Hemmingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald in that they spent a great deal of time in her cafe in Paris discussing at length writing and writers with Stein and her many legendary visitors and patrons.
