Cybersecurity 101: Intro to securing yr $#!’|’ on the Interwebs
July 27, 2019 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Cybersecurity 101 – Intro to securing your shit on the Interwebs: Making sure we can binge the new season of Stranger Things without the feds profiling us.
When you hear things like “We live in a state of mass surveillance” and “Corporations are tracking and selling all your information,” do you enter a state of moral despair? Feeling like there’s nothing you can do to avoid big brother and his corporate baby daddies looking over your shoulder whenever you turn on your smartphone? Overwhelmed by the constant knowing that searching the web is close to impossible to do in privacy?
If you answered yes or no to any of these questions, this is the workshop for you.
Coming to terms with the world we live in is a battle in and of itself, but figuring out what to do about it can be riddled with incomplete answers, hella bullshit, and words so big it takes an hour and a half of googling to even understand.
The purpose of this workshop is to give people the resources to use the internet in whatever way they want without being watched and recorded while they are doing it. This course will be part one in a two-part series geared towards easy fundamentals of computer security.
This 101 workshop will cover:
Computer Security?
What it is and why we need it.
Different threat levels
Creating a “Reasonably Secure” relationship with the internet
Securing yourself from the Feds vs Corporate interests and how they are really the same
Good practices with passwords
Alternatives to corporate search engines
What a VPN is and how to do it for free
