The Moon Before Morning
W.S MerwinMeaning to write a description
I am caught, as I should be, in reading
(the journey forgetting the distance of its ending)
like pinned butterflies the wings of muses,
once fluttering, now caught on pages.
Here are some lines that caught me just as well…
“Reading a few pages
with a shadowing sense
that I am stealing the moment
from something else
that I ought to be doing
so the pleasure of stealing is part of it.”
I share the guilty pleasure as well but revel in it.
AS IF there is anything I would rather be doing
than what I choose, on a whim, in each moment,
(and if the illusion born of the mind of our making
allows us to remember, sometimes, all that is,
is the moment, then won’t we enjoy it,
won’t the wind just catch us, our wings aloft).
