On Trial: Reagan’s War Against Nicaragua
Marlene DixonFrom Library Journal
This book and its predecessor, Guatemala: tyranny on trial ( LJ 2/1/85), are reports of the Permanent Peoples’ Tribunal, which is devoted to publicizing crimes against humanity. Periodically it holds “trials” in which expert testimony exposes facts that may not have come out in the press. This one is a criticism of U.S. foreign policy against a country where U.S.-sponsored dictatorship of 50 years left 50 percent of the population illiterate and 60 percent in extreme poverty. Yet the United States refuses to acknowledge the causes of change and prefers to see “Red” instead. While the book is biased and should be read in conjunction with another such as Shirley Christian’s fine Nicaragua ( LJ 9/15/85), it is a powerful indictment of U.S. policy that libraries cannot afford to overlook. Highly recommended. Louise Leonard, Univ. of Florida Lib., Gainesville
