CFN: West of Roan / House and Land

August 8, 2018 @ 8:00 pm - 11:00 pm

Beautiful, Appalachian traditionals, original compositions and old fashioned illuminated shadow puppet shows!

Doors at 8:00pm; Performances at 8:30pm
$10-15 sliding scale supports the artists and the AltLib

House and Land perform their music in its purest form – without amplifiers, using just two sets of hands and voices to craft intricate compositions. With a minimalist approach, their songs consider the space between notes as much as the notes themselves. The material on their debut is drawn from traditional southern hymns and Appalachian ballads that originated in England and elsewhere hundreds of years ago, arranged by two artists with an extensive knowledge of the form and filtered through their own feminist perspectives.

West of Roan draws inspiration from the old myths and legends to explore their own relationship to the wild self, and the things that come up along the way. They use light and shadow to set the scene and their puppets walk, swim, and fly within and between the topside world and the one below- where creatures and intricacies of the subconscious live. Annie Schermer and Channing Showalter perform sparse, unadorned songs in tight and intimate harmony, with both voice and two fiddles. Their music yearns for its own roots, and is in itself an exploration of loss, history, love, longing, home and family.
