The Trail of Tears
Joseph BruchacImagine that someone has kicked you out of your home and forced you to move far away. How would you feel? The Cherokee people had an experience like this. In 1838, the United States wanted their land. The U.S. had a large army. Cherokee Chief John Ross tried to make a deal, but the U.S. wouldn’t listen. The Cherokee land was taken from them. Ross led thousands of Cherokees on a difficult march west. It became known as the “Trail of Tears.” Would the Cherokee survive the terrible journey? Would they be able to build a new life?
